Working with Nature: Four Decades of Florida Landscape Design

By Clint Oster, ASLA and Boca Harbour Resident

I’ve spent over 4 decades designing and installing South Florida landscapes, and I’ve learned that working with nature beats fighting it.

When I started my practice, everyone wanted manicured St. Augustine lawns and clipping hedges. Now, Muhly Grass, Coontie, Fire Bush, and Cocoplum are transforming our yards into low-maintenance havens.

These plants evolved here. They thrive in our heat, resist pests, and need minimal water. Oak trees provide shade, attract birds, and are hurricane-resistant. Beautyberry and Firebush attract butterflies naturally.

Together, as a community, we can reduce maintenance costs, eliminate harsh chemicals, and create resilient landscapes that celebrate Florida’s natural beauty year-round.
